The Frame

E371's frame is generally in good condition. It has been well protected by paint over the locomotive's time at Maldon and we don't anticipate any major issues that would require a new frame to be considered as part of the restoration.

E-class locomotives operated as shunters right up until 1970 and were withdrawn from service when their boilers became unserviceable. However, the fundamental condition of the locomotive at withdrawal was acceptable and it has not sustained any damage while in the custody of the Victorian Goldfields Railway.

When the boiler is lifted out of the frame for re-building, we'll be able to focus on the frame, testing it for any minor cracks that may not be evident with the boiler in the frame. It will also give us the opportunity to remove any rust, not already removed at it's most recent re-paint, and to prime and paint the frame. Painting it serves two purposes - to display it in a solid colour and also to protect it from rust and corrosion.
